this new single by The Echocentrics. Also included is an all-new
Hard-hitting and prolific producer Grant Phabao flips up Don Alejo and Dudar with a serious roots reggae treatment on this new single by The Echocentrics. Also included is an all-new original track featuring Tita Lima with two additional remixes by Max Tannone and McPullish available as an exclusive on the digital version.

After dropping their debut album Sunshadows and their tribute to Timbaland The Echoland EP which both garnered critical acclaim, The Echocentrics enlists the help of Grant Phabao to add some “skank” by filtering the southern-fried, psychedelic funk of the originals through Jamaica. The results are dance-hall worthy versions that are sure to keep the crowd moving. To call Grant Phabao a “prolific” producer would be an understatement with original tracks and remixes for the likes of Alice Russell, Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston, Brownout, Nostalgia 77, and George Clinton to name a few.

The B-side on the 12” is Pioneira, a brand new original track featuring Brazilian chanteuse Tita Lima and is a return to the “classic” Echocentrics sound. As an exclusive to the digital version of this release Max Tannone and McPullish take turns remixing “It’s Not Too Late”. Famous for his Jay-Z and Radiohead mashup “Jaydiohead” and more recently Ghostfunk, where he remixes Ghostface Killer tracks with vintage African Funk, Highlife and Rock music, Max Tannone’s remix veers into heavy electronic bass territory with Natalia Clavier’s vocals keeping the delicate balance between aggression and beauty. McPullish’s remix crosses into bass-heavy territory as well but with a more understated, blissfully-dubbed out sound.

Tracklisting :
A1. Don Alejo (Grant Phabao Remix) 3:59
The original Soul/Funk track Moody Blues was engineered by Lotek at his Counter Clockwise Studios in Melbourne, Australia, who posted a stripped-down version on Soundcloud, with just guitar and Florelie Escano on vocals, asking is some remixers were interested. We managed to connect and Grant Phabao ended up producing this suprising and breezy Reggae/Afro/Blues remix which you'll find on Florelie's upcoming limited CD out october 17th 2012.

'Moody Blues' Single Info :
"MOODY BLUES" has a Soulful, Funky and Big Band sound reminiscent of the 60s. This song doesn't just apply to women! Men get moody too! This song is about not fully understanding the swings we all go through from time to time! "THE LIBERATING KIND" is a song about my own personal freedom. It's about breaking out of a rut and about establishing a new life to reach my full potential. I wrote this when I was working in a bank where I felt trapped and unappreciated. Writing this song gave me that little bit more courage to believe in music (my first love), get my shit together and then leave a place where I didn't belong.

Dubblestandart are some of the most acclaimed, incendiary "modern" Dub sounding acts on planet earth. Their vision being the "dub stadium act" for the next century with the likes of KLF is more and more coming through. Its Dubblestandart's vibrant sound clash of industrialized Dub power with the spirit of OnU/Sherwood and Black Ark/Lee Perry and their feeling for pop flavored epic melodies with a cosmic vibe: Today they are considered as an outstanding and stunning act in the recent reggae history.

Since 1988 the group is a phenomenal measurement and their collaborating artists list as "who is who" in the cream of hot spots: Anthony B., Elephant Man, William S. Burroughs, David Lynch, Lee "Sratch" Perry, Ari Up, Dillinger, Ken Boothe, Mikey Dread, Sly & Robbie, Mad Professor, a.o.

Their new creation of beauty along with the queen of Reggae and Lovers Rock "Marcia Griffiths" makes the summer become supersonic! The dreamy lovely lyrics sung with the sweetest voice of the former member of the legendary Bob Marley "I Trees" melts perfectly with Dubblestandart's 21st century urban roots beats.

J-san and The Big Mean is a rock/reggae/afro project fusing the rhythms of Afrobeat and R&B with the sounds of Dub and Soul to make your body move. When their first afro-reggae single Moving Too Fast reached Paris DJs' shores, we contacted J-san right away, offering him to try and have Grant Phabao dress the song with pure Jamaican roots vibes. The man was already a Paris DJs follower and we hooked up instantly. This deadly rough & tough remix is the another step for Paris DJs in their ongoing collaborations with brothers from Brooklyn and we can hope that J-san and Grant Phabao will do a proper EP together at some point!

Brooklyn-based soul, dub, electronic artist/producer Jay Spaker aka J-san's musical journey has been a shape shifting experience spanning 20 years of soul & roots music. Son of radical vietnam veteran father & Okinawan mother J-san was raised on the road, living with artists, musicians, ganja growers and hustlers. He was an original member of John Brown's Body in the 90s, then went on to form dub rock/jam band J-san & The Analogue Sons during the the next decade, a band described as Bob Marley meets M.I.A. produced by Manu Chao… After a few featurings, including vocalist on 10ft Ganja Plant's album Bush Rock released in 2009, J-san has launched two new bands, Double Tiger, an electronic dub / dubstep project who's just released the No Give Up single on Hydra Records Japan, and J-san and The Big Mean, a rock/reggae/afro project fusing the rhythms of Afrobeat and R&B with the sounds of Dub and Soul to make your body move. (2CD/Digital) Rare Noise Records RNR018, 2011-11-28

Disc 1 of Agemo, focusing on the emotional impact of change through technology, is a 3D60 mix of the Animation’s previous release, Asiento (RNR017), which saw Bob Belden’s seminal Jazz+drum’n bass band interpret Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. This exclusive and innovative mixing process (already witnessed on The Orb + David Gilmour’s Metallic Spheres), devised and honed by Mike Brady, Ian Thompson and Youth (3d60.co.uk), focuses on both increasing the dynamic range (20db!) of the music and providing a 3-dimensional HEADPHONE listening experience, the likes of which most users will never have had experience before. Disc 2 of Agemo, focusing on the emotional impact of change through creativity is a Remix of the original Asiento.
Press Release :
November 28th 2011 saw the release of the second recording on RareNoiseRecords by Animation, Bob Belden‘s futurebound jazz-drum’n bass-electronica vehicle - Agemo. The term "Agemo" refers to a deity within the pantheon of gods of the West African spiritual practice Santeria (Vodun) which embodies the characteristic of "Change" and "Transformation" and is often represented as a Chamaleon. Agemo is therefore a Hymn To Transformation, as seen through the lenses of technology and creativity. (For the more mathematically perverse among you "Agemo" also refers to a subgroup of the class of p-groups - all puns intended). Asiento was an interpretation of Miles Davis’ seminal work, Bitches Brew. Agemo takes Asiento and "folds" it onto itself . A Dream within a Dream.

Disc 1 of Agemo is Animation | Asiento mixed by Mike Brady with 3D60™ technology for an overwhelming 3-Dimensional Sound Experience - To be listened to with Headphones!
Disc 2 of Agemo are Remixes of the six tracks of Animation | Asiento by Bill Laswell, DJ Logic & Grant Phabao, Youth, Gaudi, Fanu and Joaquin "Joe" Claussell. Agemo is dedicated to the Memory of Dora Ramos Claussell and Manuel Claussell (2011).

"What would Miles have made of all this? He would have loved it." Rock-A-Rolla
"This is the ultimate "Head Music" .... It's your loss to ignore Agemo, and why did it take so long to get to the UK?" Jazzwise
"Ottimo ed abbondante." Rockerilla
"Innegabile la qualita' di tutti i musicisti coinvolti" Rumore

In a bid to keep abreast of cutting edge technology, RareNoiseRecords has embraced the brave new world of the 3D60™ sound experience. The label's first release to utilize the revolutionary system, which creates a surround-sound mix with the added dimension of the top in the listener's headphones, is the two-album set Agemo by Bob Belden's group Animation. Essentially a radical recasting of the six tracks from Animation's 2010 RareNoise debut, Asiento (a document of a 2006 Animation performance at New York's Merkin Hall), Agemo offers listeners a whole new perspective on the band's interpretation of Miles Davis' 1970 fusion landmark, Bitches Brew. This startling new take on Asiento brings listeners on stage, as it were, with the sounds of saxophonist Belden, trumpeter Tim Hagans, keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matt Garrison, turntablist DJ Logic and drummer Guy Licata swirling around them on renditions of "Pharoah's Dance," "Spanish Key," "John McLaughlin," "Sanctuary," "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" and the title track of Miles' seminal work.

The title Agemo comes from a deity in the pantheon of Santeria - embodying the essence of change and therefore, represented as a Chameleon. Fittingly, the second album of Agemo showcases the creative re-imaginings of renowned remix artists Fanu, Youth, Gaudi, Joe Claussell, DJ Logic and Bill Laswell as they reconstruct and reinterpret the original material from Animation's Asiento (itself an interpretation of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew), to extract the essence of what Bitches Brew means to them - from dub to funk to breakbeats to dancefloor and R&B. Says Belden of the two new RareNoise releases, "They're both basically remixes but they're two different aesthetics. One is remixing the presentation, the other is remixing the form."

The exclusive and innovative 3D60™ mixing process utilized on Agemo was developed jointly by The Jam's sound engineer and live concert mixer Mike Brady, musician and multimedia producer Ian Thompson and internationally renowned music producer and remix artist Youth. It focuses on both increasing the dynamic range of the music and providing a fully immersive, three-dimensional 360-degree headphone listening experience. With sounds coming from all around the listener -- in front, behind, at different heights and even from overhead or below - the 3D60™ system is truly a brand new frontier in music listening. And it is fully compatible with all audio playback formats. All you need is any pair of stereo headphones. (The process was previously utilized on 2010's Metallic Spheres, a collaboration between ambient house pioneers The Orb and Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour).

Says Belden of the 3D60™ system: "Portable devices, whether they are iPods, iPads, cellphones, MP3 players or laptop computers, are the most used devices for listening to music. So this is a way to create an aural experience that used to require an extensive home theater system and speakers. This replaces five speakers in your head. It's a very unique, experimental concept. It's basically mixing a live concert in a kind of holographic environment. So what you get is a wider experience aurally. It's taking the listening experience to another level."

"It was an honor for us to collaborate with such a great lineup reworking some of the 20th century's finest music," says Brady. "Asiento gave us excellent material to work with, and we think we've done it justice by bringing out the depth and energy to the live recording." And audiophiles take note: the first disc of Agemo will also be released as 24bit/96Khz FLAC.

Brady provides some background on his interest in surround sound and his development of the revolutionary 3D60™ system: "My earliest surround experience was seeing Pink Floyd in concert," Brady recalls. "They were experimenting at an Essex University gig with one of the first Quad PA systems, which was really used for key effects; it didn't create a full listening ambience, just gave the chance to pan single sounds dramatically round the gig space. But that had impact at the time and was a window on future ideas for presenting sound. So after finding myself in studios and working in TV sound, and then mixing music and engineering sound in large stadiums and halls -- with all the problems of unwanted echo ambience those gigs can present -- I moved away into directing music promos for some time, which bridged my music and TV backgrounds. But I've kept in touch with sound and playing music, and I returned to that world directly again with the 3D60™ concept and process coming into being just over a year ago, when I founded the company with media lecturer and musician Ian Thompson (from the Mike Flowers Pops band) and renowned international music producer Youth."

Brady adds that his 3D60™ system was meant to appeal specifically to the iPod generation. "We wanted to develop a fully immersive sound experience specifically designed for headphones, prompted by the big uptake in headphone use, whether it's people hearing music on iPods, on their computers or on their mobile phones. We knew about 5.1 sound but it seemed a bit physically cumbersome and limited, and it was never a big hit with music fans. It's a 'virtual' surround system based on front and rear sound source positions only, it needs encoding, and you need to buy extra speakers and amps just to get a kind of imprecise 'surround' sound effect. And that's fixed into your home room and limited to a band of 'horizontal only' sound - it's just not the 'listen anywhere' fully immersive experience that we wanted and that 3D60™ system is. We create surround ambiences at source, in truly three dimensions, that go well beyond stereo and 5.1. So 3D60 sounds can be placed absolutely anywhere around you -- in front of you, coming from behind, above, from right over your head - and they can move around through all these dimensions. We aim to provide a fuller and more exciting sound by putting the listener at the centre of the music with our 360-degree immersive listening experience. Hence the name."

Belden, who is understandably excited about this new technology in sound, also credits RareNoiseRecords' forward-thinking founders with providing the impetus for the U.K.-based label to push the envelope in the marketplace. "This 3D60™ system is totally unique. Nobody does this. For one thing, there's nothing like RareNoiseRecords in the business. They are interested in experimenting with sound and bringing the 'wow' back to the music so that we can compete with other forms of entertainment. So what we're really trying to do is to make records that are presented uniquely."
Some of you might remember the reggae remix our resident producer Grant Phabao did on N77's Seven Nation Army cover with Alice Russell… It was high time to try and rework a new Nostalgia 77 track and we had the chance to get a visit from Marco Benevento, one of our favorite keyboards players along with John Medeski and Jackie Mittoo. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Simmerdown Phabao was working on... You won't hear this kind of artists combination anywhere else so we hope you'll enjoy the unique groove & spirit in there.

Released early 2011, Simmerdown, featuring stunning vocals from Josa Peit, was the first single to be lifted from the latest Nostalgia 77 album, The Sleepwalking Society, released late March 2011. We've been active supporters of Nostalgia 77's measureless talent since day one and some of you might remember the reggae remix our resident producer Grant Phabao did on N77's Seven Nation Army cover with Alice Russell… It was high time to try and rework a new Nostalgia 77 track and we had the chance to get a visit from Marco Benevento, one of our favorite keyboards players along with John Medeski and Jackie Mittoo. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Simmerdown Phabao was working on… This track was hidden in our closet for a year, and when we learned that Nostalgia 77 was coming on play in Paris on February 16th at La Bellevilloise, we offered his label, Tru Thoughts, to put it up for free as a virtual release on Paris DJs. You won't hear this kind of artists combination anywhere else so we hope you'll enjoy the unique groove & spirit in there. And we hope to see you tonite (feb 16) at la Bellevilloise!
22 years-old Selah Sue (real name Sanne Putseys) is a Belgian musician and songwriter you might have heard about already. She was featured on Cee-Lo's latest LP The Lady Killer, and released in march this year her first album, Selah Sue. She listened to a lot of ragga and reggae in high school and, together with soul, hip hop and some slower tunes, the style has become an essential part of her repertoire. She even wrote two ragga songs herself (Raggamuffin and Fyah Fyah)... She gets here the unique Grant Phabao Jamaican treatment, with this hip hop-ish roots reggae remix of Crazy Vibes.

Gil Scott-Heron left us at the end of May. His bluesology, black American music and message marked us forever. Sandra Nkaké and Jî Drû have written and recorded in one night an homage piece, A Place For You!. Joined by a bunch of friends who felt as much concerned as they were, on a riff from Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, they sing a chorus tribute to Scott-Heron and borrow a text extracted from I Think I'll Call It Morning. The original track was mixed by Blackjoy, with many guest remixes, including from your favorite soundmaster and reggae producer Grant Phabao, who spectacularly manages to take the song to Kingston, Jamaica - but if you're a regular Paris DJs listener, you should be used to it by now... The Man is gone, the message stays - Sandra Nkaké & Jî Drû

Our good ol' friend and doublebass player Lawkyz has just launched a new project, Versus, between hip hop, jazz, funk and blaxploitation. The band is playful and fun, sounding like early stuff from The Herbaliser with a distinguished French taste for Jazz musings. Their album will be out late april 2012. Meanwhile, they've asked many of their friends for remixes and the n°1 reggae producer worldwide, Grant Phabao, who had already worked with Lawkyz in the past on some still unreleased tracks with Amayo from Antibalas, agreed to put his magic hands on the Mr Blue piece. The result is astounding as always, Versus are immediately transported to Jamaican coasts and you'll be breakin' to hip hop while bouncing to reggae at the same time with a big smile on your face!!!

Versus - Mr Blue (Grant Phabao Remix)
Feedback :
"There are two standouts: the first by Grant Phabao, who cut his teeth on dub and reggae and never stopped sharpening. He gives "Pole Position" a stellar irie vibe with the best beat on this collection." - Derek Beres - huffingtonpost.com

Press Release :
The legendary wave tune Echo Beach by the Canadian combo Martha & The Muffins is back on earth.

Germany's finest (as far as progressive sounds and flows are concerned) dub label, named Echo Beach and inspired by the lyrics and spirit of that track, has set out to pay tribute to this song which is more than a classic. The first mix/remix of Echo Beach, done by Reverend E.C.H.O. and released on the Echo Beach sampler 'Various Artists: Far Away In Time' has already enjoyed a strong reputation world wide. Marki Gane, the original composer of Echo Beach and still a member of M & M (aka Martha & Muffins) - and by the way, also married to Martha Johnson (lead singer of the band M&M) - enthused: "It sounds as if the orignal ECHO BEACH was shot into outer space, hit a planet and floated back to earth in pieces..."!!!

NOW - 30 years later - after Echo Beach was written - the Echo Beach label proudly presents the 30th Anniversary Remixes and the full and essentiel: ... it is one of those tunes that on first hearing you like, but can't exactly place why, and by 30 seconds into the spin you´re close to falling in love. You just have to go with it and this seductively simple number is just that. Don´t try to understand it just accept this as love at first sight.

Martha Johnson the female vocalist of ECHO BEACH said recently:
"We all feel time. It goes too slow or too fast. Everything today seems to come and go in a flash and is so disposable and easily replaced. Perhaps this is why a reflective song like Echo Beach is still so popular. The sentiment expressed in the lyrics and music is universal and lasting. 2010 marks thirty years since the song that Mark Gane wrote and I sang was first heard around the world. The passage of time only makes the song more nostalgic for many people who hear it and recall a special time in their lives. The reinvention of Echo Beach by so many artists brings new life and a new audience to the song. After all, don't we all long to get back to the beach? So check out the vibes ( you will listen to a beautiful, uplifting and classy dubby-housy-funky-chilly-ambient album ) and head out to the Echo Beach, the place were almost everybody wanted to be...!"
Recorded in July 2009, this remix is both official and unreleased. Produced par the international master of roots reggae Grant Phabao with Earl Blaize during a visit from the latter to Grant's studio in Paris.
Press Release :
If you’re looking for the meaning of it all, better not try to decode this record: "Somewhat absurd... like, Pony", says Richard Dorfmeister about the conceptual side of "Pony - No Hassle Versions". No meaning might have a meaning here. A certain lack of meaningfulness describes the nature of Tosca pretty well; on their equine record even more so.

Releasing an album of remixes of their most recent work stays in tradition with the Tosca modus operandi. There's been at least one remix album for each 'original' Tosca album to date. In the case of "No Hassle", Tosca’s 2009 longplayer, this might make even more sense than before, since "No Hassle" was an introspective work. "Pony" brings the more club-oriented face of Tosca to the forefront. To put it simply, Tosca, the project of the two Austrians, Richard Dofmeister and Rupert Huber, combines bass-heavy downbeat music with abstract soundscapes of found sounds and material from numerous studio sessions. When these recordings are handed over to remixers, everything changes; texture, dynamics, structures. Still, "Pony" is a true Tosca album; the sound signature of Dorfmeister and Huber cannot be superseded by a remix.

Let’s take a look at the remixers. Smith & Mudd, Steve Kotey and Pete Herbert are three London-based producers, whose musical credit-lines reach back to the 90's. Paul "Mudd" Murphy (with partner Ben Smith) delivers a 'classic downbeat' --what's called 'Balearic' these days --production of "Pony"’s opening track; but not the superficial kind that has given the genre a bad name. "Rather brilliantly subtle, like early Fila Brazillia", as Richard Dorfmeister states. Aimed straight for the dancefloor are Pete Herbert’s "Joe Si Ha (Reverso 68 Mix)" and Steve Koteys collaboration with brothers Lee on their "Elitsa" remix. All three versions share a musical heritage that points to the sound of London dance-archetypes such as the Idjut Boys or Faze Action. And of course there’s a connection to the various former acts and aliases of the remixers themselves: Bushflange, Chicken Lips or Akwaaba for example Clubmusic history lurks around each corner... Quite similar in sound to the London heads is Venetian remixer Bottin. His "Disco Spritzer" remix of "Elektra Bregenz" is, despite its name, more hip-swaying longdrink than appetizer. And Kalabrese, who, being from Zurich, would call that an Apéro, has made his "Oysters In May" into anything but a mere starter. This is more like a main course á la Henrik Schwarz, including some additional vocals from the young dj himself. Grant Phabao is a Parisian dj- and producer-legend, ever since first droppping his frenchified Rubba-Dub styles on the Pro-Zak Trax Label at the end of the 90's. When he's not doing Reggae takes on Tosca, he's busy mixing some riddims with the latest Q-Tip or the likes. His version of "Birthday" sounds like something hot off the press from Compass Point Studios in Nassau.

If you ask Nicola Conte for a remix, what you'll get is a proper re-interpretation of your music. While others would try to evoke such via sampling, the man from Bari takes his crew of handpicked musicians into the studio for a new recording. His jazzy reconstructions are always refreshingly unique like a custom fitted Italian suit. Rodney Hunter is a veteran member of the G-Stone family. His suprising version of "Rosa" is fairly soundtrack-ish. No looking for the perfect Disco beat this time, none of his trademark Rave/Funk groove workouts. The public get's to see another face of the the man who sometimes sounds like he's a lost member of the Stereo Mc's. The "Spirit Catcher Mix" by Belgians Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet of Tosca's "Joe Si Ha" is designed to be danced to and leaves nothing left to be desired. The Spirit Catcher sound is a sure bet - as long as you dig their electronic Disco / House take of course. To close the album, Tosca went a bit experimental. Besides giving their music to a handful of remixers, they also contracted a contemporary chamber music ensemble to record an adaptation of "Rosa". The two Tosca producers then took these recordings and re-edited them, resulting in a closing track by the Kuk String Quartet.

If, after listening to this elegantly sequenced collection of remixes and versions, you still long for a deeper meaning, take a good look at Markus Roessle’s horse photography. If, after that, you’re still filled with a desire for deeper meaning, you’re probably making too much of a hassle. Understand that Tosca is about 'the meaning of no meaning'. Free your mind and your pony will follow.

Press Release :
The Catalysts of Coconut Rock: Ocote Soul Sounds' Creative Mutations and Funky Beats

Just a sliver of the ocote wood starts a blaze. A few pieces of this pine was all Martín Perna needed to get his cooking fires started in a small fishing village in Michoacán, Mexico. It was there that Perna - known for founding Antibalas, the NYC collective that sparked an Afrobeat revival - found a new direction.

"For several years, I'd spend time in this little fishing village," Perna recounts, "living, writing, and doing a lot of green building. People would hear I was a musician and ask me to play some music. It was kind of difficult. What do I say: I play baritone sax, which I left in NYC, with this fifteen-piece band. If I play you some of my music, it's not going to make sense," Perna recalls. "I started thinking about what it means to be a musician and having a wide enough repertoire that I didn't need fifteen people to play. So I learned how to write for the guitar."

Yet it wasn't until a mishap on a biodiesel cross-country trek that Perna found the perfect vehicle for this new sound, and the perfect musical partner in Adrian Quesada, of the Austin-based super-group Grupo Fantasma. The result was Ocote Soul Sounds. The grit and funk of the gridlocked NYC streets intersect seamlessly with the voices and rhythms of dusty Latin American lanes on their latest album Coconut Rock (ESL Music; release: June 2, 2009).

Perna and Quesada had lived in eerily similar parallel universes. Though Quesada grew up in the Texas border-town of Laredo, and Perna came up in Philadelphia (later New York), both musicians straddled borders literally and artistically. Both had grown up on hip hop and the jazz and funk it was built on; both taught themselves to play multiple instruments; both had founded game-changing, booty-shaking big bands; and both were deeply moved by a powerful spirit of social and political activism, the spirit of ocote. Ocote, the Nauhatl word for pine, is key to starting fires, the fires used for cooking and heating across Mexico and beyond. A tiny handful, and even damp pieces of wood catch ignite, Perna says. "And I like that metaphor. I have always seen my role in whatever I do as a catalyst. We're not the big log burning that everybody sees. We are the one that gets it started," whether it's the current Afrobeat craze fueled by Antibalas, Quesadas's initiative in Austin to help improve the lives of the city's musicians, or Perna's help in founding of NYC's first biodiesel factory.

Years ago, Perna converted his station wagon to run on restaurant grease and journeyed from Brooklyn to Mexico, making a brief stop in Austin to meet Quesada, a friend of a friend. The two began playing around with some song ideas, and things really clicked. But after a few tracks, Perna had to hit the road.

The return trip gave an unexpected boost to the collaboration. "Martín's car broke down and started having all sorts of problems. He had to drive from the Mexican border to Austin at 20 miles per hour, which is usually a four-hour drive, and then got a tow all the way from San Antonio. So he got stuck here and stayed with me until he could fix the car, which took a while because no mechanic would touch it back then. And we finished the first album," Quesada smiles.

The musical partnership continued, because, as Quesada explains, "It fit like a glove: I'm the rhythm section, and Martín's the horn section." Both have dozens of song ideas and sketches floating around - from melancholy cumbias to funkified Latin descargas - just waiting for the right rhythmic tweak or melodic twist. "That's how a lot of our songs work: We'll have these parts that are good but unfinished, and then the other person adds the elements to make the song whole," Perna notes.

Perna had been working on one song on Coconut Rock, "Vampires," for years, recording demos with friends TV on the Radio and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but feeling like the song could go further. So Perna and Quesada tackled the song, a critique of capitalism inspired in part by the shocking greed and gentrification that overtook Perna's Brooklyn neighborhood in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. On that day Perna left the World Trade Center right before disaster struck and discovered his mother was suffering from cancer. "After we finished that song, I feel like I don't have to make another musical critique of capitalism ever again," laughs Perna, who is spending 2009 on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua.

Since that biodiesel breakdown evolved into the first album, Ocote Soul Sound has expanded to a seven-piece live outfit, bringing in close friends as well as long-distance collaborators. The result is what Perna calls "a community feel."

One such collaborator, Brazilian vocalist Tita Lima, is featured on the psychedelic Latin jam, "Vendendo Saude E Fé" ("Selling Wealth and Faith," a Brazilian folk expression of hope and optimism). "Tita and Adrian have been in touch for a while. She recorded one of his songs a while back with her own group, even performing it on Brazilian television. For "Vendendo…", he sent her the instrumental, and waited, and waited, worried that we wouldn't make the deadline. Finally, when she sent some demos back, it was butter!"

Ocote Soul Sounds is a great change of pace for two leaders of big, sprawling, democratic bands: "Ocote is more experimental. It's a bit more psychedelic," Perna explains. "Both Adrian and I are on same page creatively, and it's nice to work really fluidly like that," compared to the slower creative process of getting the twelve musicians of Antibalas to agree, something akin to "Congress trying to pass a budget," as Perna playfully puts it. Quesada draws on his experience working with Prince, with whom Grupo Fantasma has performed with from LA to London over the past two years. "Working with Prince was one of the biggest turning points for me as an arranger," recalls Quesada. "We were able to watch Prince's attention to detail in his craft. He would listen to the whole thing together and then break it down section by section, separating the parts, only to build it back together again, but much stronger."

Ocote Soul Sound's fantastic realism draws on everything from the writings of Chicano right activist and psychedelic cowboy author Oscar Zeta Acosta ("Revolt of the Cockroach People") to Cuban children's rhymes about the boogeyman ("El Diablo y el Ñau Ñau"), featuring lyrics by Chico Mann aka Marcos García of Antibalas. "Prince of Peace" is all about "a messiah coming back to town looking like Sun Ra, with this giant raucous marching band strutting down the streets."

A strong political message flows through the wild images: The boogeyman might be about to snatch you off to a secret Homeland Security prison, and the Second Coming is all about justice. "Pan, Chamba y Techo" calls for the basic necessities - bread, work, a roof, and water - that we all have a right to, "the basic human rights all governments should provide," Quesada notes.

"Ocote Soul Sounds in many ways is an expression of cultural identity, the stress and beauty of remaining authentically connected to all of the strands of culture which make us who we are," Perna explains, and this is about something far deeper than cultural diversity; it's about tapping into crucial creativity. "To paraphrase Einstein, we can't solve problems using the same mentality that created them. It will be the creative innovations and mutations that provide solutions and survival strategies for the times ahead. At the same time, all this must be done to a funky beat."

Outside of music, he is dedicated to the pursuit of alchemy and utopian projects such as biodiesel fuels, community art projects, and superadobe architecture. One recent work is BLACKOUT!, a coloring book which came out August 14, 2006.
